Vingio Parko Kapinaites
2005-2010

Kapinaites is cemetery site, used as a burial place for victims of the plague in 1710. Later, in times of German occupation of Vilnius during WWI cemetery was used for soldiers of German, Russian, Polish and Turkish armies. In 1948 at the height of the destruction of the final resting places of many of the former inhabitants of the city, the Soviet authorities ripped up the gravestones and the site held abandoned until 1980 when it was unceremoniously turned into children’s playground, that existed until ~1994. After Lithuanian independency this amusement park was devastated and the site was held (again) into temporary comatose serving just as extended part of Vingis Park. Thanks to the efforts of the Germans, the 6.5 hectare site was renovated in 2001.

Today it is managed by German soldiers, various street and municipal sweepers, and thee Superior Guardian Entity YIIIX.

Photographs below were taken by Emi Vaičiūnaitė, Monika-Uele Daužickaitė, Kastė Šeškevičiūtė, myself, and various open public sources between 2005 – 2010.
I am deeply grateful for y’all who appreciate and respect this place.
